Innate Behaviors. Notes Innate behaviors includes both automatic and instinctive. Innate behaviors are also known as inherited behaviors.
Animal Behavior An action or group of actions performed by an animal in response to some stimulus.

BIOLOGY EOCT REVIEW Plant & Animal Adaptations. Adaptations in Plants Adaptation: any structure or behavior that increases an organism’s chance of survival.
DO NOW 1.Turn in your animal survey lab. 2.Explain instinct 3.Explain a learned behavior.
Animal Behavior Chapter 33. What is Behavior? Behavior: – A response to a stimulus Stimulus: – An environmental change that directly influences the activity.
Plant Tropisms. What are we talking about? Emergence - An outgrowth, as a projection, on the surface of a plant Force – A push or a pull Turgor Pressure.
Behavior Plants and Animals. What is behavior? Anything an animal does in response to a stimulus in the environment. Behavior can be inherited or innate.

Review Of Innate Behavior

What is this an example of? Hydrotropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to water (typically the roots) Positive = because it moves towards the water (stimulus)

What is this steam an example of? Geotropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to gravity (gravitropism) Negative = because it moves against the pull of gravity (stimulus)

What are the roots an example of? Geotropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to gravity (gravitropism) Positive = because it moves with the pull of gravity (stimulus)

What is this an example of? Phototropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to light Positive = because it moves towards the light (stimulus)

What is this an example of? Thigmotropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to touch Positive = because it moves towards the thing it touches (stimulus)

What is this an example of? Thigmotropism = plant growth in a certain direction in to response to touch Positive = because it moves towards the thing it touches (stimulus)

Innate behavior is…… Learned behavior is…… Something you're born with Something you must be taught

Complex Innate Behaviors = Instincts Migration (moving) example Hibernation (sleeping) Dominance Hierarchy (social levels) Territoriality (fighting for space) Courtship (before mating) Example

What behaviors occur with hibernation? Eat to prepare Sleep Lower metabolism Another time animals lower their metabolism?

When its HOT! Estivation = reduced metabolism in intense heat. Desert Biome In which biome would you find this behavior? Snail is from arid regions around the Mediterraean. When it gets to hot and dry the snail seals off itself inside its shell (shown in the second picture) to protect from water loss. breathes are only taken intermittently when CO2 in the lung rises to a critical level The toad is from the midwest US also a arid hot place. Toads spend about 10 months of the year estivating underground and emerge with the first torrential rain of summer to a frenzy of breeding and egg laying that can be over in less than 24 hours. Adults then gorge themselves on insects and quickly restore their body fuel reserves to a level that can sustain them for another year. During estivation, metabolic rate drops to about 20-30% of the resting rate of aroused toads and breathing is intermittent to minimize the loss of water vapour.

Moving in response to a chemical What is chemotaxis? Moving in response to a chemical Special word for chemicals that attract other animals? Pheromone

Another name for a biological clock? Circadian Rhythm (about a day = 24 hours)

Simple Innate Behaviors = Reflexes Examples?
