3 INTRODUCTION This comprehensive and demographically representative new survey of Armenian Americans reveals an array of attitudes, beliefs. Views, values, perceptions and experiences about a broad range of subjects. Among the topics covered are: Armenian identity; family structure and interests; inter-ethnic issues; Armenia-related issues; volunteerism; political participation; the role of the media and publications; moral, ethical and spiritual issues community involvement; economic and financial status and priorities; attitudes towards education and religion; political participation assimilation challenges; the affects of September 11; individual and community concerns, priorities and opportunities.

4 There are approximately eight million Armenians in the world today, of which 55 percent live in Armenia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. Of the 45 percent who live in the Diaspora, about one million have settled in the United States. California is the state with the largest Armenian population; and the largest concentration of Armenians in the Diaspora today is located in the greater Los Angeles area.

5 19th century, about 20,000 Armenians fled their homeland for America. The second wave of immigrants came during the first decade of the 20th century. In 1914, there about 30 Armenian church communities in the United States and the total Armenian population had grown to about 100,000.

6 The third wave of immigrants came after the 1915 Genocide, in which 1.5 million Armenians perished at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. Between 1914 and 1924, about 25,000 Armenians entered America. A fourth wave of Armenian immigrants came at the end of World War II as a consequence of social, political and economic oppression in numerous countries. A fifth wave of immigration was largely from the Middle East, because of the civil war in Lebanon and the fundamentalist Moslem influence in Iran. Emigration has also increased from Armenia due to economic problems.

7 In order to propagate their rich cultural heritage, traditions and Values, Armenians have established in the United States important institutions and organizations which include: a score of churches and schools; research centers and libraries; radio and television programs;, daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and journals;, numerous cultural, educational, political, youth, athletic, compatriotic, literary, professional, alumni and student organizations.

8 Many Armenian families have had to cope with the hardships of their parents uprooting and resettlement, and have had to build a new life in a new country. They have worked very hard to secure financial stability for their families. The hardships endured by their parents (in most cases survivors of the Genocide) have had profound influences on their lives. Their parents suffering has imbued them with a great loyalty to the homeland and s fierce determination to establish themselves successfully in a new society. As the new wave of immigrants settled in Armenian communities within the United States, they added a new dimension to the existing Armenian cultural and economic life, complementing and supplementing the tremendous efforts made by the Armenian Americans who preceded them.

9 The challenges and prospects Armenian Americans face today are not the same that the Genocide generation faced a century ago. The lifestyle of the new society, the loss of family and cultural values, globalization vs. regionalism challenges, the influence of the media, daily economic and social pressures, and the materialistic environment that surround them, are constantly creating new challenges individually and collectively. This study is a preliminary attempt to define and understand the status, role and prospects of Armenian Americans with the earnest hope that it may stimulate further interest and action among the religious, educational, political and civic leaders who serve the community.

10 It was evident from the nature of the research issue, that a unique questionnaire was needed to be devised. No existing instrument adequately captured the research needs of such a study and a fresh approach to the entire issue was needed. Questions included in the initial survey were based on the writers experience within the Armenian community in the United States, as well as invaluable input from three research scientists and numerous religious, educational, political, cultural and civic leaders and community members. The questionnaire was tested on 200 randomly selected Armenian Americans. The enthusiastic response to this trial run re-enforced the research belief that the study was examining sensitive and important issues. After the initial test of the preliminary version of the instrument, a revised questionnaire was sent to three professionals in the field of research with the request that they change the wording or add items, wherever they felt alteration was indicated. These qualitative responses provided invaluable assistance in refining the survey instrument. The input from the three research scientists, provided the basic pool of information for the questions to be included in the final version of the survey instrument. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

11 The questionnaire was mailed to 8,624 Armenian Americans residing in 22 states from California to New York. It was felt that this cross-country sampling would be most representative of the Armenian American community. The names were randomly selected from a demographically representative master list of 75,000 addresses compiled from the following sources: Mashdots College, Church, Armenian community, Armenian yellow pages, alumni, compatriotic, professional, and school/university directories. Responses totaled 3,014 or 35%. The study was conducted between May and December of In all cases, respondents were instructed not to give their names, so that complete anonymity would be observed and questions would be answered as honestly as possible. Incomplete or double answers were not included in the final collection of data, although the number of incomplete or unusable responses was surprisingly small.

12 The completed questionnaires from across the country were scored, coded, tabulated and statistically analyzed. The margin of error for the sample as a whole is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

353 GLENDALE -- Armenian Americans, many of whom originate from Lebanon, Iraq, Russia and other countries, are linked by a common denominator of Armenian traditions. But as Armenian Americans in the United States struggle to hold onto these traditions, a new study has found the demographic is changing -- Armenian youth are not attending church services regularly, Armenian Americans trust American politicians more than those of their own ethnicity and while Armenians take interest in the general welfare of Armenia, a majority would rather stay in the United States than move back.

354 The 350-page study, conducted by Garbis Der Yeghiayan, founding president of Mashdots College in Glendale, attempts to define the structure of the Armenian community in the United States, and along with religion, touches on topics such as family, education, politics and Sept. 11. "It's about the Armenian-American community coast to coast," Der Yeghiayan said. "It's about where we are today and what are the prospects of the Armenian community in America. The study, which took about two years to complete, bases its findings on a questionnaire sent to 8,000 Armenian Americans from 22 states, of which 3,000 responded. Der Yeghiayan also did a study in 1991 focusing on Armenian American youth.

355 And of the key findings, the study shows that while Armenian Americans are very attached to their traditions and values, the younger generations are struggling with assimilation and are showing less interest in attending regular Armenian church services. "They have not changed drastically from where they come from," Der Yeghiayan said of the demographic. "They continue to value tradition." But as new generations are growing, they are also changing, and dealing with the internal and external conflicts of pleasing their parents and fitting in, he said. "They have parallel obligations," Der Yeghiayan said. "One, to their traditions as members of the Armenian community. But they also want to be recognized as part of the general society."

356 And this could in part explain the drop in Armenian church attendance by youth, something the Armenian American community should be concerned about, Der Yeghiayan said. "I think the church has realized that it needs to change with the times to be able to accommodate the youth," said Ani Asatryan, president of the Cal State Northridge Armenian Students Assn. and a Glendale resident. "That's not to say that they're not involved. It's a larger percentage that is surely and slowly becoming more involved. Only 1% of Armenian American youth are attending Armenian church services every Sunday, a significant downtrend since the 12% rate found in 1991, according to the study.
