Escape Plans for School and Other Public Buildings

What we will learn today We will learn about what to do if you ever have a fire in your school or in another public building, like a library, movie theater, mall or restaurant.

We have already learned that: We should know two ways out of every room in our home in case of a fire

We should also know two ways out of our classrooms and school buildings in case of fire.

Do you know what this sign means?

Does this sign mean the same?

Can you point out an exit in your classroom? Can you point out exit signs in other areas of your school?

If you have a fire in your school, you should: Stop what you are doing Listen for instructions from your teacher Go quickly, carefully and quietly to your meeting place DO NOT run or push and listen carefully to what your teacher tells you NEVER hide in a closet or under your teachers desk

Pulling a fire alarm is not a joke! –It is against the law if there is no fire –You can be expelled from school –You can cause injury to other students, teachers or fire fighters

Remember to look for exit signs in other buildings –restaurants –theaters –malls –libraries Can you think of other buildings where you should look for exit signs?

Exit signs may look like this

Or like this

When you stay in a hotel –Look for exit routes on the back of the door –Locate marked exits on your floor some exits may not be directly outside - but will lead you to outside exits –Look for exit signs above the doors and at floor level (in case you are crawling low under the smoke) –Count doors between your room and nearest exit

When you stay in a hotel –If there is no smoke on your floor, go to the nearest exit feel doors for heat before opening on any floor –Never use the elevator in a fire emergency - always use the stairs

REMEMBER If a fire does happen in your school or another building you are in: –Stay calm –Look for the nearest exit –Crawl low under the smoke –Feel doors before opening them –Once outside - stay outside
