Mixtures and Solutions Say there should be no disruptions during the lesson. That means that you should be listening to instruction and not talking. If you need to ask a question than what should you do? Make reference to the learning goal throughout the lesson. Tell students to get ready for some important information. Tell students to take Cornell notes.

What do You Think About Mixtures and Solutions? Before we go over mixtures and solutions, what do you think about mixtures and solutions? Agree or Disagree: You can identify a mixture by looking at it without magnification. A solution is another name for a homogeneous mixture. Solutions can be solids, liquids, or gases. A teaspoon of soup is less concentrated than a cup of the same soup.

Mixtures Mixtures -- matter that consists of two or more substances mixed together, NOT chemically combined. When you mix salt and water, the salt and water keep their own identities, even though the salt dissolves in the water. Ex: You can separate the mixture back to the two original substances by boiling off the water and you will find the salt left behind. All mixtures can be separated by physical means such as: Sorting Filtering Heating Cooling

Mixtures versus Compounds

Types of Mixtures: Mixtures are classified by "how well" they are mixed. 1. Heterogeneous Mixture 2. Homogeneous Mixture 1. Heterogeneous Mixture- a mixture that has visibly different parts. (particles are large enough to be seen and separated) Ex: chocolate chip cookies, Trail Mix. One hand full of Trail mix might contain raisins, peanuts, and M&M’s. While another only contains raisins and peanuts. This is the "least mixed" of the mixtures. You could separate the parts back out pretty easily for the trail mix.

Solids can be mixtures as well… 2. Homogeneous Mixtures: A mixture that appears to be the same throughout, there are no visible parts. Solids can be mixtures as well… Brass is made of 70% copper and 30% zinc. If you cut a brass candlestick into ten pieces, each piece would contain the same percentage of copper and zinc. ***Solutions: A special type of Homogeneous Mixture when one substance dissolves in another. Ex: Ocean Water is a solution -- different salts are dissolved in water. Ex: Lemonade is a solution Vinegar is a homogenous mixture of acetic acid and water. As the mixture created has only one phase it is a solution. Air is a mixture of 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and approximately 1% other trace gases, primarily argon

The substance that is dissolved is called the solute. The substance that does the dissolving is called the solvent. Example: Lemonade Lemonade crystals are the solute, and the water is the solvent. Water dissolves a large number of solutes. Solutions with water as the solvent are given a special name, they are called aqueous solutions. solvent kinda sounds like dissolve so that may be good enough I think I always remember that solvent is the substance which does the dissolving (ex: water), by seeing the word "vent" in the word "solvent". In my mind, I see a vent (like an air conditioning vent) and I have to make something solid ("solute") go through it. I see myself mashing sugar cubes (solute) into a vent (solvent). Solute is what is being dissolved. Solvent is what it's being dissolved in. I guess you could think that solutes salute to the solvent.

Examples of MIXTURES! Heterogeneous Homogeneous

Solutions can occur in all 3 phases of matter. Metal solutions are called alloys, they are examples of solids dissolved in solids. (formed by melting components, mixing, then allowing to cool) EX: * Gold Jewelry is a solid solution of gold and copper. * Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc * Stainless Steel is an alloy of chromium and iron.
