Everyone has the same basic needs shelter food / water clothing

Physical features, climate, and natural resources affect the way people in different parts of the world meet their basic needs of food/water, clothing and shelter.

United States

Climate affects the type of clothing people wear. United States

Climate affects the kind of homes people build and live in in an area. United States

Climate affects the variety of products that can be grown in an area. United States

Antarctica People in Antarctica wear warm clothing to protect themselves from the cold climate. They often use animal skins, which are a natural resource, to make their clothes. They also build homes from their natural resources.

Japan

Japan Earthquakes are common in Japan. Houses and office buildings must be built with special supports to withstand the movement of the earth. The geography of Japan affects the basic need of food and shelter.

Japan More than 75% of Japan is made up of mountains and hills which makes the land difficult to farm. Japan has a large population and cannot grow all the food it needs to feed the people. Physical features affect people’s basic needs.

Japan Japan is an island nation. The ocean surrounding the nation provides fish that helps fill the basic need for food. The ocean as well as the fish are natural resources.

China

China Monsoons are winds that bring heavy rains from the ocean. They have a good and bad affect on the food supply. They bring water to grow crops, but sometimes they bring too much rain and cause flooding. Homes and crops can be destroyed.

China People live in the eastern part of China where the soil is fertile. This part of the country gets plenty of rainfall. This makes it easy to grow rice and other crops.

Africa

Africa In the desert people wear long robes and head coverings . The clothing is light colored because it does not absorb as much heat from the sun. The long robes and coverings on their heads also protect them from sandstorms. Climate and physical features affect the clothing people wear.

Africa Many people live in the savannas, land where tall grasses grow. This is an area that is good for growing crops and raising livestock. People live along the coastline where fish provide the basic need for food.

Africa People use their resources to build homes. North Africa is mainly desert. There is not enough water to drink or grow many crops.

The three basic needs in life food/water shelter clothing

People around the world may wear different kinds of clothes because of their climate.

Physical features affect people’s basic needs.

Physical features can affect the kinds of homes people can build.
