Tessellations

Tes·sel·la·tion /ˌtesəˈlāSH(ə)n/: An arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.

Real World Tessellations

Most famously associated with… M.C. Escher: Leeuwarden, Netherlands June 1898—March 1972 Graphic Artist and Printmaker. Known for creating mathematically- inspired woodcuts (tessellations).

TESSELLATIONS

1 shape tessellation

Project Steps Create tessellation template with 3”x3” paper, scissors, and tape. Trace 5 shapes on sketch paper to make sure they interlock correctly, then create at least 3 optional images within the shapes and get them approved. Use ruler to LIGHTLY section off 9”x12” paper in three, 3in. wide rows (horizontally). Trace template all over paper (using ruler lines as guide for spacing and evenness). Begin shading with colored pencils!

How to make a Tessellation Template: You Will Need: Square piece of paper Scissors Tape Cut out shape from TOP of square. SLIDE and tape on BOTTOM. Cut out shape from RIGHT side of square. SLIDE and tape on LEFT side.
