Characterization Direct vs. Indirect

Direct Characterization Direct characterization is how an author tells his or her reader about a character. Direct characterization occurs when the author specifically reveals traits about the character in a direct, straightforward manner.

Indirect Characterization The way a writer uses SALT to reveal the personality of the character: S – What the character Says A– What the character does—his or her Actions L– What the character Looks Like

T—What the character Thinks (This is the deepest, most personal level Indirect Characterization requires that the reader make inferences.
