Background and Current Situation Qualifications Wales collects and publishes General Qualification data for Wales. Ofqual currently collect Vocational and Other Qualification (VQ) data for Wales. We publish the VQ data for Wales that is provided to us by Ofqual. Our aims: Be responsible for collecting, processing and storing data for Wales. Publishing regular statistical outputs for General Qualifications and Vocational Qualifications in Wales.

General Qualifications Collected data for 2017-18 academic year Aligning our templates, collection schedules and publications with Ofqual as far as possible Data submissions are made via QiW Publications badged as Official Statistics

Vocational Qualifications so far June Used Ofqual’s register to build an initial list of Other Regulated qualifications for awarding bodies (ABs) recognised in Wales. July Worked with a focus group of 10 ABs for small scale testing. August Other Regulated qualifications list made available to all for checking. October Small scale trial collection of Quarter 3 (July-Sept 2018) VQ data with AB focus group. November Review of the trial collection process with focus group. Small amendments made to our systems. Deadline for all ABs to verify their list of Other Regulated qualifications (23 November).

Qualifications on QiW Approved qualifications are qualifications that have met our qualification-specific approval criteria. Designated qualifications are qualifications that we have agreed as being eligible for use on publicly-funded programmes of learning in Wales. Both Approved and Designated qualifications are listed on our public QiW database. Other Regulated qualifications are all other qualifications offered by recognised awarding bodies to learners in Wales that have not been opted out of our scope of recognition. Other Regulated qualifications are not eligible for public funding and are not displayed publicly on QiW. Awarding bodies are responsible for updating the list when necessary.

Vocational Qualifications: Next steps We are collection data for Welsh learners in parallel with Ofqual on Friday 18 January. You will still be required to submit data for Wales to both ourselves and Ofqual. Data on the number of certifications is mandatory. Data on the number of registrations is voluntary. Data will be submitted to us via QiW. Our templates and collection points mostly align with Ofqual. Both templates (type 1 and type 2) will be available to download from QiW. Template type 2 will be pre-populated with relevant qualifications. An additional field for QUI / QW Number has been added. QUI /QW Number and QAN will be reported in the same row. We aim to take full responsibility for data collection in Wales from the Quarter 1 (January – March 2019) period onwards.

QiW: Submitting data

How do we use the data you submit? Official Statistics publications Regulatory activities

Vocational Qualifications: FAQ What is the definition of a Welsh learner? What happens if we want to move a qualification from Other Regulated to Designated and vice versa? Should we include Qualifications Wales’ logo on certificates for Other Regulated qualifications? Are there any data protection implications related to the VQ collections?

Any questions?
