Ch. 10.1, Part II – Resources of Europe World Geography Ch. 10.1, Part II – Resources of Europe

Europe’s Resources Europe is a rich and prosperous part of the world. Part of that prosperity comes from the many resources it has, including: Coal: coal has been burned for several hundred years in Europe, and it drove the Industrial Revolution. However, it also can pollute the air when mined or burned, & it’s a concern: Poland, Romania, Coal Today Petroleum: Oil is another important resource, with most of Europe’s oil coming from the North Sea, and efforts are being made it minimize the negative impact these can have: Oil Rig Alternative Energy: There are efforts to help; wind farms, hydroelectric plants, etc. Europe

Other Natural Resources There are many other resources in Europe. Europe creates about 1/3rd of the world’s iron ore, for instance. Stone has been and is still used in construction, from homes to cobblestone streets. The large forests that once covered Europe are mostly gone, replaced by farmlands, towns, etc. The remaining large forests are in Finland and Sweden, and also the Carpathian Forest.

Peninsulas & Plains Europe is basically one giant peninsula, surrounded by water on 3 sides. It also has many smaller peninsulas jutting off its base, with lots of islands around as well. People, separated by islands, water, mountains, etc., developed their own cultures and languages in relative isolation. There are over 40 independent countries in Europe today as a result. VID The Northern European Plain is the major landform of Europe. This area spreads across the northern half of Europe. This area is very fertile, and so lots of things are produced here, like fruit, grain, etc. Most Europeans live in this area.

Mountains & Waterways Europe has many mountains as well, that mostly separate Northern and Southern Europe. They are known as the Alpine Mountain System, and include the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathian Mountains. In some ways, these areas resemble the Rocky Mountains of America VID, VID. Europe also has many rivers that allow movement and trade. Most of the major rivers are navigable, or able to be traveled by boat. The largest ones are the Danube River and the Rhine. VID, VID There are relatively few lakes in Europe, but the ones that exist are often popular for recreation. Natural resources include coal, which fueled the industrial revolution, and more recently petroleum and natural gas. Forests once covered Europe, but were chopped down long ago, leaving only small remnants of their former glory. Fishing is an important activity too. Yet we have to protect these resources: VID
