Ch. 10.1 Landforms & Waterways
World Geography Ch Landforms & Waterways

Landforms Europe is a continent that is connected to several others, including Asia and Africa. Together, Europe and Asia are often referred to as Eurasia. To the South lies the Mediterranean Sea, and to the West is the Atlantic, and several seas to the North. The Black Sea and Russia lie to the East. Most anywhere you go in Europe, you will be connected to the ocean or a sea quickly. Most countries are within 300 miles of a large body of water. Only several countries are completely landlocked (no outlet to the sea). Longer rivers help these countries access the ocean with boats however.

Naval Prowess Being so close to the ocean meant that Europeans naturally were drawn to it. Their history and lives have been shaped by it. They developed skills in fishing and sailing, which encouraged trade and helped their economy. Sailing helped the Europeans move people and goods quickly, and they used that to spread their power and culture around the world. Thus, today Europeans and have both influenced and been influenced by people and cultures all around the world.

Peninsulas & Plains Europe is basically one giant peninsula, surrounded by water on 3 sides. It also has many smaller peninsulas jutting off its base, with lots of islands around as well. People, separated by islands, water, mountains, etc., developed their own cultures and languages in relative isolation. There are over 40 independent countries in Europe today as a result. VID The Northern European Plain is the major landform of Europe. This area spreads across the northern half of Europe. This area is very fertile, and so lots of things are produced here, like fruit, grain, etc. Most Europeans live in this area.

Mountains & Waterways Europe has many mountains as well, that mostly separate Northern and Southern Europe. They are known as the Alpine Mountain System, and include the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathian Mountains. In some ways, these areas resemble the Rocky Mountains of America VID, VID. Europe also has many rivers that allow movement and trade. Most of the major rivers are navigable, or able to be traveled by boat. The largest ones are the Danube River and the Rhine. VID, VID There are relatively few lakes in Europe, but the ones that exist are often popular for recreation. Natural resources include coal, which fueled the industrial revolution, and more recently petroleum and natural gas. Forests once covered Europe, but were chopped down long ago, leaving only small remnants of their former glory. Fishing is an important activity too. Yet we have to protect these resources: VID
