Pol Pot was born in 1925 (as Saloth Sar) into a farming family in central Cambodia

Pol Pot declared "Year Zero" and began a radical program to create an idealized agrarian communist society. He crushed social institutions such as banking and religion and emptied cities of their inhabitants.

Khmer Rouge, "Red Khmers,"  a left-wing Cambodian Khmer Rouge, "Red Khmers,"  a left-wing Cambodian faction in the 1950s. Led by Pol Pot gained control of Cambodia in 1975. one of the century's greatest massacres. KILLING FIELDS

The Khmer Rouge secret police turned this Phnom Penh high school into its headquarters, renamed S-21. Thousands were tortured and executed in former classrooms.
