Remembering 9-11-01

Who is this Guy? Saddam Hussein- leader of Iraq, a country we invaded in 2003- thought they had weapons of “mass destruction” & allowed terrorists to train there

Who is this Guy? Abu Omar al-Baghdadi- leader of ISIS

Placemat Activity- 9/11 Each student will take 2 minutes to write down any thoughts/knowledge about the events of 9/11. Using everyone’s ideas, DISCUSS and create a short paragraph (2-3 sent.) in the center of the paper that answers this: Describe the events of 9/11 to someone who knows nothing about them. Circle anything that is FACTUALLY incorrect.

Key Points to Know… 19 Hijackers 4 Planes all heading to California 2 into New York’s World Trade Center 1 into the Pentagon 1 into a field in Shanksville, PA

President George W. Bush Addresses the Nation

Who Did This? Al Qaeda- terrorist network head- Bin Laden. 19 hijackers part of network- 15 of 19 from Saudi Arabia (OBL birthplace & where he lived until his 20’s)- none from Afghanistan. Why Afghanistan? The Taliban (group that controlled Afghanistan) allowed Al-Qaeda to train there- shared many political and religious views OBL- fought with the USA against USSR (today Russia) invasion of Afghanistan

What Happened to Al-Qaeda? •Osama bin Laden- killed by Navy SEALS 5/1/11 •Al Qaeda primarily in Middle East & parts of Africa, though there are smaller “cells” in other countries, especially in Europe, b/c European Union offering refuge from nations currently being affected by war. ISIS- has replaced AQ as most dangerous group now

Linking 9/11 to Today - The Rise of ISIS

JUSTIFICATION: America’s foreign policy Why did they commit 9/11? JUSTIFICATION: America’s foreign policy 1. U.S. troops in Middle East near holy Muslim sites 2. American support of Israel 3. U.S. supported sanctions against Iraq 4. Osama bin Laden (1998) issued an Islamic religious ruling (known as fatwa) that killing “Americans and their allies - civilians and military - is an individual duty for all Muslims.”

What Happened Next? “We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these attacks and those who harbor them” ~G.W.Bush Al Qaeda’s terror network, including Osama Bin Laden were being protected by the Taliban government in Afghanistan. U.S. invaded Afghanistan 10/7/2001 as part of a military campaign known as “Operation Enduring Freedom.”- still there today

Remembering 9-11-01

9/11 Changed the World Forever How has the World Changed? 1. Security at Airports 2. Rise of EXTREMIST groups/ terrorism- ISIS 3. Patriot Act- gov’t created right after 9/11, can gather data on citizens, foreign nationals & gov’t (no warrant needed)- some would argue violation of 1st Amendment rights .

American’s Immediately Respond HEROISM is a theme that runs deep throughout the 9/11 story. The number of firefighters and paramedics killed: 343 The number of NYPD officers killed: 23 The number of Port Authority police officers killed: 37 The number of U.S. troops killed in Operation Enduring Freedom: 2,343 Estimated units of blood donated to the New York Blood Center: 36,000 Estimated amount donated to 9/11 charities: $1.4 billion Emergency actions plans did go into effect & NYC was essentially SHUT DOWN. Nobody could travel by car, train, plane, helicopter, bus, bridge, or tunnel in or out of NYC. The local government (police, firefighters, EMS) were all busy responding. So how did all of those people escape lower Manhattan?
