Act One – “And I Love Her” The Beatles There are many reasons why I chose this song to portray act one. First of all, the song states that if you saw his love, that you would also love her. My first thought on this was Romeo being madly in love with the beautiful Rosaline. The song also states that he gives her all of his love, which could elaborate on the fact that Romeo is head over heels in love with her. Another reason is that he states that their love will never die, which again were Romeo’s thoughts on his relationship with Rosaline. And finally, the continuous “and I love her” could show Romeo’s intense love as well. As you can see, there are many reasons why I related this song to Romeo and Juliet.

Act Two – “It Won’t Be Long” The Beatles (Evan Rachel Wood) “It Won’t Be Long” can easily be related to act two of Romeo and Juliet. When I heard this song, my focus was on Juliet, just after Rome had been banished and married to her. Juliet was waiting on her love to return to her after he left home, just as in the song. Another point is in this song she sings about sitting at home while everybody else has fun. This could relate to Juliet as well because she is somewhat always waiting on Romeo and is unable to go out at night. In the next section, she sings about her love coming home, which is almost the exact same as Romeo returning to Juliet’s mansion the night after their marriage. Near the ending, it is stated that they will be happy everyday, which while this is not true for Romeo and Juliet, and their relationship will bring much sadness to them and others, , it will bring happiness in the future between the Montague’s and Capulet’s. Therefore, I chose this song to show for a portion of act two.

Act Three – “In My Life” The Beatles I chose this song to portray the part of the play where Tybalt dies. Also, this song can include Juliet as well, due to her mourning of her loved cousin Tybalt and the fact that it was her husband who caused the death of him. My first thought was Juliet reflecting on all of the happenings going on in her life and how some are good and also bad. The line “some are dead and some are living” is relatable to this part of the story as well. This can be easily compared to Juliet loving Tybalt, now dead, and Romeo, still alive at this time. Stated just after that is the line, “I’ve loved them all” which to me is the part of the story that even though she loves Romeo, an enemy, she’s still very close to her own family. In the next few lines, it says they will never loose affection for their lost and also stop and think about them. Towards the end, it states that she will love him more which could be the fact that she gave her life for Romeo. Once again, I believe I have made a very good pair of this song and Romeo and Juliet.

Act Four – “With a Little Help from my Friends” The Beatles (Joe Anderson and Jim Sturgess) While there are many relationships we could relate this song to, my first thought was probably not what most people would have in mind. Juliet, in act four, comes to Friar Lawrence asking for help to sneak her way out of the marriage with Paris. Being already bonded to Romeo by the church, Friar, of course, agrees. Another point that I would like to make is the “love at first sight” line in the song. I believe that this could compare to Romeo first meeting Juliet and almost instantly falling in love with her. This also brings up an interesting point. In the middle of this song, he sings that he need somebody to love, followed with an echo asking if it could be anybody, which can lead somebody to think that Romeo can be a little desperate for love and may only be in love with the idea of love.

Act Five – “Let It Be” The Beatles I related Shakespeare’s play with the song “Let It Be” for many reasons. Mainly, I compared the song with the very ending of the play as well as the ending to the two families feud. In the beginning, he speaks of Mother Mary coming to him with words of wisdom, which I related to Juliet in the final moments of living. She allowed her love for Romeo to over come her love for living, which subconsciously could be the ‘words of wisdom’. Also, “there will be an answer” can compare to the solution of two young lives being taken over the endless fighting of two families. Within the next few lines, he sings about two being parted, but still being able to see one another. In my mind, I think of this as the death of both Romeo and Juliet, but also Juliet’s want to be with Romeo. To me, “Let It Be” can be a way of telling us that even though we have been through rough times, we will still find a way to get through it all. 
