Adhesives And Their Uses

PVA adhesive PVA Adhesive (Polyvinyl Acetate) is a water based adhesive that is white and creamy in appearance. It used for gluing wood to wood. PVA is applied as a thin layer on one surface then the work is cramped, excess glue removed and left to cure. The adhesive sets in 2 hours and is fully cured within 24 hours. PVA adhesive is generally Not Waterproof and therefore unsuitable for exterior work.

PVA adhesive One of the main problems with PVA adhesive is illustrated in these three pictures. If a glue stain is left on the surface of the wood this will prevent varnish from penetrating the wood properly and leave a white stain. Too much glue applied Glue carelessly wiped off White staining showing glue

Using PVA adhesive 1) Remove any dust from the joint 2) Apply PVA adhesive to all contact surfaces 3) Spread glue thoroughly 4) Clamp 5) Remove excess glue with damp cloth and allow to dry 6) Finished

Cyanoacrylate adhesive Cyanoacrylate Adhesive (super glues) has been formulated to quickly bond rubber, plastics, metal, and ceramics. Caution Care must be taken to avoid contact with skin/eyes as this type of adhesive sets in seconds

Cascamite adhesive Cascamite is a waterproof, synthetic resin adhesive for use for joining wood to wood especially outside woodwork and boat building. Cascamite is a waterproof adhesive suitable for outdoor use. Supplied as a powder to be mixed with water. To mix add 2 parts powder to 1 part water (by weight) in a non metallic container and mix into a creamy paste. This glue is then applied to the joint and cramped for 6 hours.

Epoxy Resin adhesive Epoxy resin adhesives are generally two part adhesives (Adhesive & Hardener) When mixed they can be used to bond most materials. Typically Wood, Ceramics, Glass, Metals, Rubber, Fabric, Leather and most Hard Plastics.

Impact adhesive EVOSTIK IMPACT ADHESIVE This is a one part contact adhesive ideal for numerous jobs around the home and in the workshop. Impact adhesives provide a strong bond on contact without the need for jigs, clamps or weights. Suitable for bonding many types of substrates. Typically you could use an impact adhesive to glue Plastic Laminate to a kitchen worktop Warning Impact adhesive should only be used in a well ventilated area as this type of adhesive can produce noxious fumes. Plastic Laminate

Tensol Cement Tensol Cement is a single component adhesive used to glue Acrylic to Acrylic. This type of adhesive hardens due to solvent evaporation to produce a clear bond in cast acrylic sheets. The product is quickly and easily used direct from the bottle and cures within 24 hrs. Warning Tensol Cement should only be used in a well ventilated area as this type of adhesive produces noxious fumes. Acrylic to Acrylic.
