Advantages of Plastic Light weight Resistant to corrosion Low thermal conductivity Can be translucent, transparent and opaque Electrically resistant Easily formed Recyclable Comes in a range of colours

Disadvantages of Plastic Flammable Cost of recycling Only some types can be recycled Takes hundreds of years to biodegrade Manufactured from natural resources and raw materials that are difficult to replace e.g. oil

Types of Plastic Thermoplastics: – Thermoplastics soften when heated and harden again when cooled. – This softening and hardening can be repeated indefinitely. – Thermoplastics are used in products which do not have to withstand high temperatures.

Types of Plastic Thermoplastics: – Acrylic – Polypropylene – Polystyrene – ABS – Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Types of Plastic Thermoplastics: – Plastic Memory: When gently reheated, formed thermoplastic will return to it’s original shape.

Types of Plastic Thermosetting plastics: – Thermosetting plastics are heat- resistant, hard-wearing, easily cleaned and can be coloured. – They are ideal for pot handles, light switches and plastic laminate kitchen worktops. – A product made from thermosetting plastic will not soften with heat.

Types of Plastic Thermosetting plastics: – Urea Formaldehyde – Melamine Formaldehyde – Epoxy Resin – Polyester resin

Files Forstner Bit

Abra File

Hacksaw Junior Hacksaw

Emery Cloth Plastic Polish

Twist Drill Wet and Dry paper

Finishing Stages of Finishing: – Cross filing – Draw filing – Emery Cloth – Wet and Dry paper – Steel Wool – Polishing

Vacuum Forming Stages of Vacuum Forming: 1. The thermoplastic sheet is clamped on the vacuum former and heated up. 2. The pattern is raised and is pushed up into the hot thermoplastic sheet from below.

Vacuum Forming Stages of Vacuum Forming: 3. A vacuum pump is used to suck the air down and it pulls the thermoplastic sheet over the pattern. 4. The clamps are released and the moulded thermoplastic sheet can be removed.

Dip Coating Stages of dip coating: 1. Heat the object in an oven. 2. Dip the hot object into plastic powder in a fluidiser. 3. Replace the object in the oven and wait until the plastic has melted. 4. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
