Vision I hope to engage students in an English classroom to be more engaged in the reading and find the true essentiality of it all. It is good knowledge for students to know why we read and why it is important to always reflect on our own work.

By David May

Ice Breaker Write down whoever in history has influenced you to want to do something in your life. Or perhaps state something that spurs you on in your life; state something/someone that influences you.

Topics for Today Who we are. Influences around us. What we want. What we do.

Who exactly was Frederick Douglass? Get some background information on Frederick Douglass through these sites. ass/home.html ass/home.html 1X4 1X4 What influenced him to be who he was?

Frederick Douglass An African American slave that escaped. He was ordinary. Nothing necessarily special. He was granted the means to learn to read and write in English. Just a man seeking freedom.

Influence Can we imagine if we were bound to not do what we want to most?

Imprisonment What does this drive you to do? It leaves you stranded and no where to go. You are very much miserable because you cannot do what you want to do. Your dream of becoming something is crushed. You cannot do anything about it because you are imprisoned. So you will want to take flight.

Reflection Write down how you would feel if you were imprisoned and relate it to our Douglass felt. How did Douglass feel as he was under a slave master? What emotions entailed along? How did he see the world? How would you see the world in his shoes?

Page 14: His mangled body sank out of sight, and blood and brains marked the water where he had stood. A thrill of horror flashed through every soul upon the plantation, excepting Mr. Gore. He alone seemed cool and collected. Blog words about this passage. What kind of life would it be to live if you were Douglass? Could you bring yourself to even reflect on such a moment in life?

Frederick Douglass: Venn Diagram He simply was just a man that was thrown into a crazy world. He is in a crazy world like we live in except ours is less harsh. Reflect on his reading and try to relate a similar event that happened in your life of hardship. Compare and contrast using a Venn Diagram.

Frederick Douglass You are an ordinary person and with dreams as well. You can make a difference because Douglass was able to. He was someone to be thought of as nobody and became somebody. You are key to this world!
