6 What is the difference between a simile and metaphor?
Figurative Language descriptive language that creates an image in the reader’s mind. What is the difference between a simile and metaphor?

7 A simile makes a comparison between two things using the words: like or as.
A metaphor is a comparison without using the words like or as. A metaphor says that one thing IS another. Let’s take notes in our Reading INB

8 Today we are going to find similes and metaphors in our book.
Example: Chapter 5 “a low whistling sound seemed to circle around them as the boat began to tremble, and the mist wrapped around them like a cocoon.”

9 You will find a simile on each of the following pages: 9, 39, and 68
Directions: Write the simile Draw the 2 things it is comparing Write the actual meaning

10 As we read the next few chapters, see if you can find a simile to add to our list.

11 Chapter 7 First Focus – Discussion
1. Why do you think Katie stood up in the boat? 2. Besides being cold, how do you think the boys feel now? 3. What might they be thinking? 4. What do you think will happen next? Read Chapter 7 with a partner and try to answer these questions as you read.

Compare/contrast what you have learned about the time period of 1776 (during the Revolutionary War) with what the author describes in the book. Does it match up? What would you add that the author hasn’t already written in the story?

13 What is an idiom? An idiom is a form of figurative language Literal language: a phrase that means exactly what it says Nonliteral language: a phrase that does not mean exactly what it says
