1 Why Work In Groups ? Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

2 Is this breakdown usually what you REALLY LEARN from doing Group Work ?

3 Well… we know this happens, so things will be done MUCH differently in 8 th Grade Science. Individuals in the group will NOT necessarily share the same grade.

4 However, when there’s lots of work to do… two (or more) heads are Better Than One !

6 Who Does The Work ? Everyone in the group should share equally in the work – and it should be organized to avoid duplication of work.

7 What is Your Responsibility ? 1.Do your RESEARCH ON-TIME. 2.Share important info you found with your group. 3.Organize group so each person can “specialize” on small parts of the project. 4.Teach the rest of the class when you present.

8 What Happens When Someone In The Group Is Not Prepared… OR Does Not Do Their Part ? The group does not have what’s necessary to create and present a quality project. Someone else in the group will now have to fill in the missing work to make and present a complete project (so the class can learn from it – which is the goal).

9 A SUCCESSFUL TEAM REQUIRES ALL MEMBERS TO DO THEIR PART – AND DO IT WELL !!

10 There’s a LOT less stress among the group And… what Happens When ALL Group Members Do Their Part ? The audience learns about the topic better (and will get Test questions correct more… the goal ) Everyone feels better about a Job Well Done!

12 Keep in mind, this first “group” project is really just three INDIVIDUAL projects done separately but being combined into one file – one after the other. This will help you prepare to do a true group project next. So act like it’s a group project but you are doing your own INDIVIDUAL PROJECT within the one file.

13 HOW TO DO “SMART” RESEARCH AND GET STARTED ON google SLIDE PRESENTATIONS for 8 th Science PROJECTS Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

14 The basic idea here is to gather CORRECT information about each bulleted item you are responsible for – sorting through ALL the information available on the web. You will “filter out” the useless/bad information. You should get information from at least TWO SOURCES for each Research Item given to make sure they match.

15 Books, newspapers or magazines (they have to be edited and checked for accuracy) – and you can use them if you want – just put the Title, Author and Date along with the information (but you’ll have to type it all out) So… what’s a good source ? Internet sites… But remember - ANYONE can put information on the web – so check the URL address’s last three letters.

16 .edu (education).gov (government).org (used to be non-profit – not guaranteed so be careful) You can use.com and.net BUT be very careful of them (they are usually trying to sell you something or just part of a network) Good ones are: ALSO BE VERY CAREFUL OF: Yahoo Answers and Wiki Answers Anyone can put answers in these types of places – and they are too often WRONG!

17 THE FOLLOWING IS HOW YOU WILL CREATE AND WORK WITH THE google SLIDE PRESENTATION use your teacher’s format for naming the file and use Chrome at school (and home if possible)

18 Your group will setup the basic file in class through someone’s school google account - and SHARE with everyone in the group, as well as the teacher – AND… THEN MADE THE TEACHER THE OWNER. THAT IS THE ONLY FILE YOU WILL WORK WITH AND PRESENT !! DO NOT CREATE ANOTHER ONE !!

19 KEEP IN MIND ON THE FIRST “GROUP” PROJECT ABOUT ELEMENTS – YOU ARE REALLY DOING AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT TO LEARN HOW TO DO ONE FROM START TO FINISH. YOU WILL SIMPLY BE ADDING OTHER STUDENT’S ELEMENT PROJECTS TO YOURS – KIND OF LIKE HOW TRAIN CARS ARE ATTACHED. THREE SEPARATE PROJECTS LINKED TOGETHER.

20 WHEN YOU START WORKING ON IT FIRST – MAKE A PROPER TITLE SLIDE FOR THE GROUP. KEEP IT SIMPLE and USE LARGE FONT TO MAKE IT EASY TO READ (similar to your Title Card for flashcards) for security use only last name initial

22 * for the Element Project only you need to make a Title Slide for your own element with JUST YOUR NAME ON IT. YOU ARE DOING AN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT – SIMPLY ADDED TO THE SLIDES OF OTHER PEOPLE WE ARE LEARNING THINGS IN STEPS YOU DID YOUR OWN ALL ABOUT ME PROJECT TO LEARN ABOUT google docs NOW YOU ARE LEARNING TO COMBINE YOUR WORK WITH OTHERS BUT DOING YOUR OWN TOPIC.

24 WHEN YOU START WORKING ON YOUR PART make a slide for each Research Item You Are Responsible FOR (type it or copy from assignment document) THEN PUT YOUR NAME WITH LAST INITIAL in the LOWER RIGHT of each slide. Every one of your slides needs to have your legal First Name and Last Initial on them. Those are now your “work area” of the project. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO ANYONE ELSE’S SLIDES (teachers can see this in the Revision History)

26 While you are doing your research, copy two supporting good “chunks” of information to the slide (along with a hyperlink of the site it came from) - and if you run across any good pictures, you copy them as well with their hyperlink. These RESEARCH SLIDES WILL BECOME YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY SLIDES LATER. They are basically a STORAGE AREA FOR INFO.

28 Do this for EVERY RESEARCH ITEM YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR. After you find two chunks of info and two pictures for each research item, then you can create actual “Presentation Slides” from that information/pictures.

30 After you have created Presentation Slides for each RESEARCH ITEM – simply move your Information Slides all to the end of your presentation starting with a slide called “BIBLIOGRAPHY”.

33 end show IT SOUNDS COMPLICATED BUT REALLY ISN’T. FOLLOW THE FORMAT AS GIVEN TO CREATE YOUR OWN INFORMATION SLIDES and THEN SIMPLY CREATE NICE PRESENTATION SLIDES. THEN PUT THE INFORMATION SLIDES AT THE END FOR A BIBLIOGRAPHY. OF COURSE YOU NEED OTHER SLIDES TO KEEP THINGS ORGANIZED (Title Slide(s) and Bibliography Slide) SO THE AUDIENCE CAN FOLLOW YOUR PRESENTATION AND NOT BE LOST. WHEN WE DO A TRUE GROUP PRESENTATION YOU WILL DO THE SAME THING EXCEPT SPLIT UP THE RESEARCH ITEMS.
