What is a Travel Plan? “ A general term for a package of measures tailored to the needs of individual sites and aimed at promoting greener, cleaner travel choices and reducing reliance on the car.”

The need for a Travel Plan Outline the reasons for needing a Travel Plan. It may be one of the following reasons: Congestion problems Parking issues Planning permission requirements Development plans As part of commitment to being a responsible employer

Potential benefits for staff Outline the benefits to staff. You may wish to include some of the following : Cost savings Reduced stress Improved levels of fitness and wellbeing Time savings – less time driving more time to relax or prepare for a meeting Social aspects – meeting others that you work with. Knowledge that they are doing their bit for the environment.

Potential benefits to the business Outline the benefits to the business. You may wish to include some of the following: Potential cost savings Help towards environmental accreditation Excellent PR opportunities to build reputation Healthier workforce, less absenteeism Increased productivity Reduced congestion

Understanding current travel costs Here you need to breakdown the current travel costs. Visible costs such as company cars, business travel expenses. Invisible costs such as loss of staff time ( due to congestion, parking issues)

Possible savings Here you can add a few ideas to demonstrate how savings can be made through travel plan implementation. For example: Maximum engine size of company cars, minimum fuel efficiency requirements Savings on car parking with reduction of number of spaces rented Consider charging for parking Introduction of video conferencing to reduce need for business travel.

The Travel Plan process A Travel Plan is a living document and the process should be a continual one. Here you can: Provide an overview of the scope of the travel plan – what it will include. Add in resource requirements – staff time and money. Outline the possible aims and objectives of the plan. Give an indication of timescales involved.
