What is Neon? It's an element with a/an… •atomic number of 10 •atomic weight of 20.1797 •atomic symbol of Ne •group number of 18 •period number of 2 •group name called 'noble gases' The name for the element 'neon' comes from the Greek word for new (neos) Neon has 10 protons, 10 electrons, and 10 electrons It is also normally in a gas form

What did we do with the element Neon What did we do with the element Neon? We contacted the manager of a local neon sign company (Concept Neon) and e-mailed them some questions we had about their product. We asked questions such as how they incorporated the element into the signs and what made their neon signs different than of their competition.

Here are some of the questions we asked the company…

How do neon signs work?

What determines the colours used in your neon signs? Is it only neon gases that are used? What determines the colours used in your neon signs?

How long do the signs last? Can your signs be seen during the day?

Where do you get your materials? How do you determine the cost of your signs? Where do you get your materials?

And finally, we asked what differentiated 'Concept Neon' from others…

Some fun facts about the neon element: Neon is the second lightest noble gas after helium Stable forms of neon are produced within stars Liquid neon is now available and is used as a cryogenic refrigerant 0.0018% of the Earth’s atmosphere is made up of neon Even though neon is rare on Earth, it is the 5th most abundant element in the universe
