Transition into Year 10/10A Mathematics 2019 Ms Woolley Head of Mathematics

Discussion Points Year 9 and 10 Curriculum Content Success in Senior School Maths: Independence and Support Year 10 Assessment Year 11 and 12 Pathways How to be Year 10 ready

Year 9 into 10 Curriculum Year 9 Pythagoras and Trigonometry - right-angled triangles - finding side lengths and angles Geometry - similar triangles Measurement - surface area and volume Probability - Venn diagrams - Tree diagrams Year 10 Pythagoras and Trigonometry - applications in 3D and non-right-angled triangles - where do sine, cosine values come from? Geometry - applications of similarity and circle geometry Measurement - surface area and volume: cones, pyramids and spheres Probability - Tree diagrams where probabilities not all equal - Conditional probability (extra information)

Year 9 into 10 Curriculum Year 9 Year 10 Linear Algebra Linear Algebra - Sketching/finding equation of straight lines - Parallel and perpendicular lines - Simultaneous equations Quadratic Equations - Factorising techniques - Null factor law Quadratic Graphs - Turning point form and transformations - Factorising to find intercepts and turning point Year 10 Linear Algebra - More techniques for simultaneous equations Quadratic Equations - 2 more factorising techniques - A formula that solves all quadratic equations Quadratic Graphs - Turning point form and transformations - A rule for the turning point - Maximum / minimum applications

Year 9 into 10 Curriculum Year 9 Finance and Index laws - Compound interest - Powers including negative powers Year 10 Finance and Index laws (Exponential equations) - Equations and graphs - Applications: radioactivity, compound interest Statistics - mean, median, mode - Box plots - line of best fit, used to make predictions

Success in Year 10 Mathematics Use your course outline and work schedules to manage your workload Be prepared: - Summary/notes book separate to your work book As well as class notes update summary book with your own items, annotate your notes, add errors and reminders, have a calculator section, add things you learn from questions, tasks etc. - Bring your CAS calculator to every lesson - some questions will only be solvable on CAS

Success in Year 10 Mathematics Use the online materials: schoolbox learning site, HOTMaths site – quizzes, video examples, extra worksheets Learning site Video example Access your teacher, access maths help – be proactive Ask questions, aim to understand not to remember! Homework - stay up to date. It is crucial to explore the problem solving style questions not just the skill-based questions.

Review, Practise, Follow Up Review class notes, read examples related to set work Practise key skills including number skills – do not reach for the calculator all the time Perfect practice – set out your working correctly, draw and label your graphs accurately, answer the question Practise test technique by re-reading word problems before you attempt the problem and after you think you have answered it Follow up on your work – ask for help on difficulties, correct any errors made, complete extra questions if you are not feeling confident, note down difficulties to pay extra attention to for test or exam revision

Assessment for each topic A progress quiz – mid-topic (10%) - value the feedback, record errors, a chance to correct your thinking and address difficulties An assignment (15%) - focus on word problems, extended response style, some purely a mathematical focus A test (75%) - technology free component (short answer questions) - technology active component (CAS and summary book, multiple choice and extended response questions)

Sample Specialist / IB HL Questions TALK MORE

How to be Year 10 ready Can you: - Sketch a straight line graph - Find the equation of a straight line - Simplify algebra and solve linear equations - Apply SOHCAHTOA and Pythagoras’ theorem - Identify similar triangles and use the scale factor - Factorise with a common factor, DOPS, trinomials - Solve a quadratic equation using the null factor law - Sketch a quadratic graph using transformations - Work with a Venn diagram - Apply area formulae for composite shapes, surface area and prism volume

Year 10 Mathematics 2019 This will be posted to Year 10 Maths pages on STL Link with the sample checklist Course outline for 2019 will also appear there Questions?
