Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can be neither created nor destroyed; it can only be transferred or transformed Transferred – from 1 place to another Ex: Light switch to light bulb Transformed – from 1 type to another Ex: Electrical to thermal (toaster)

Energy Efficiency Proportion of energy consumed in a device/system that is transformed into effective work Amount of useful energy = x 100 Amount of energy consumed Example: Calculate the energy efficiency of a cell phone that requires 1500 J per second but only requires 850 J to light up and make sound. What happened to the “unused” energy?

Improve Energy Efficiency Isolate system as not to loose heat (house) Decrease friction with lubricant (motor oil) Ensure all parts of system are moving how they are supposed to
