Conservation of energy!
Ch. 5 Section 2 Conservation of energy!

THINK ABOUT IT… Energy is CONSTANTLY being transferred all of the time! When you turn on a light, the electrical energy turns into LIGHT energy, which can then be transferred as HEAT energy!

Also… Potential energy is constantly being transferred into kinetic energy *Think about when you use a bow and arrow or when a roller coaster is at the top of a hill and suddenly starts moving…potential energy gets transferred into kinetic energy!

Mechanical energy Mechanical energy = the total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system that can be expressed by the following equation Mechanical energy = Potential energy+ Kinetic energy *Mechanical energy is energy due to the position and the motion of an object or the objects

Law of conservation of energy
States that energy can never be created or destroyed (only transferred) *What this means is that (on a large scale) the amount of total energy in the universe does not change…

Example…a hair dryer!!! You may have heard that it’s important to conserve energy. What this means is it’s important to lower the consumption of energy sources like, electricity/ fuel oil/ natural gas/ etc. The Law of Conservation of Energy is only stating that energy in= energy out

A hair dryer for example, consumes electrical energy and transfers it into thermal energy, sound energy and kinetic energy!

Talk and share out! With your table, come up with 2 instances where energy is being used. Explain where the energy comes from and where it gets transferred to! (Hair dryer example is already taken)! 3-4 minutes!
