Unit B – Chapter 1 Energy

Energy – the ability to cause change kinetic energy – the energy of motion; a moving object has the most kinetic energy at the point where it moves the fastest potential energy – stored energy, or the energy an object has due to its position or chemical composition

law of conservation of energy – a scientific law stating that no matter how energy is transferred or transformed it can neither be created nor destroyed energy efficiency – a measurement of usable energy after an energy conversion; the ratio of usable energy to the total energy after an energy conversion solar cell – a type of technology in which lightsensitive materials convert sunlight into electrical energy

CHAPTER OUTLINE I. Energy exists in different forms. A. Different forms of energy have different uses. 1. Energy – ability to cause change 2. Forms of energy – a. mechanical energy – moves objects b. sound energy – vibrations of particles in solids, liquids, and gases c. chemical energy- energy that is stored in a chemical composition of matter d. thermal energy – total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter.

e. electromagnetic energy – transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves f. nuclear energy – produced by the center of the atom called the nucleus B. Kinetic energy and potential energy are the twogeneral types of energy. 1. Kinetic energy – energy of motion 2. Potential energy – stored energy

II. Energy can change forms but is never lost. A. Energy changes forms. 1. Conversions between potential energy and kinetic energy 2. Using energy conversions B. Energy is always conserved. C. Energy conversions may produce unwanted formsof energy. III. Technology improves the ways people use energy. A. Technology improves energy conversions.

1. Efficient lights 2. Efficient cars B. Technology improves the use of energy resources. 1. Solar energy 2. Wind energy
