3 2. Mechanical Energy Total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system ME is energy due to the position and motion of an object ME = potential energy + kinetic energy Total ME does not change…however the amounts of PE and KE do Examples

Energy can not be created or destroyed; it simply changes forms The total amount of energy in the universe remains constant

5 4. Energy Conversions Friction converts mechanical energy to thermal energy (ex: riding a bike or skates) Mass changes to energy – nuclear fusion (sun) and nuclear fission (reactors) Body converts chemical potential energy
