Excretory System and Endocrine System

Essential Question

Warm Up – What do you already know? What does the word excrete mean? Can you think of any ways your body excretes fluids? What is the purpose of the body getting rid of fluid?

The Excretory System Main Idea: The excretory system uses several organs to remove all types of wastes from the body.

Excretory System Functions

Component/Types The Lungs, Skin, and Large Intestine The lungs expel carbon dioxide when you exhale. Sweating is another form of excretion. When sweat is produced, it removes excess water and salts through the pores. Sweating helps to regulate body temperature. Solid wastes produced by the digestive system are eliminated through the large intestine.

Components/Types The Liver Helps with digestive and removes certain toxins from the blood. The Urinary System Consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. The main function of the urinary system is to filter waste and extra fluid from the blood.

Caring for your Excretory Health Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Limit your intake of caffeine and soft drinks, which can increase the amount of water lost through urination. Follow a well-balanced eating plan. Practice good hygiene to prevent harmful bacteria from causing infection. Get regular medical checkups. Report changes in bowel habits and in frequency, color, or odor of urine.

Understanding Excretory System Problems Excretory system problems commonly result from infection or blockage. Symptoms of conditions include burning pain during urination, increased frequency of urination, fever, and possibly blood in the urine. Example: Urethritis – is an inflammation of the urethra. Treatment requires a visit to a doctor and may include antibiotics to eliminate infection.
