Goal: To review key ideas, events and people AND to examine how the Industrial Revolution changed society. But first – a trip down memory lane.... A few weeks ago you were introduced to the Enlightenment and its optimistic ideas about society and human beings’ progress. You were also introduced to the Enlightenment’s ideas of rational thought and scientific worldview. We then took a trip through the 18th century where Enlightenment views are changing people’s lives in some places and not changing them in others (continuity and change) Then we studied the massive and rapid change brought on by industrialization. We can look at the Industrial Revolution as one of the outcomes of the Enlightenment – it’s focus on science and progress. BUT- we have to ask:

BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Was the Industrial Revolution political, social and economic Progress? TASK: In your new groups of 4, discuss specific evidence that the IR WAS progress (PSE) and WAS NOT progress (PSE) Make a T-Chart and focus on Economic, Social, and Political trends (see next slide) Use Unit Calendar, HW, class work Dictionary.com’s definition of progress: forward movement, advancement

Key evidence (people/events/ideas) that show the IR WAS PROGRESS Key evidence (people/events/ideas) that show the IR WAS NOT progress Economic: Social Political
