RECARE set-up Rudi Hessel on behalf of coordination team Jan 12th, 2014

RECARE set-up RECARE framework Links between WPs Flow of information Introduction to planning

RECARE project objectives Identify and fill knowledge gaps in our understanding of the complex functioning of soil systems under the influence of climate and human activities Develop a harmonized methodology to assess state of degradation and conservation for different soil threats Develop a universally applicable methodology to assess the impacts of soil degradation and measures on soil functions and ecosystem services, including costs and benefits Design, select, and implement in close collaboration with stakeholders, innovative measures, and evaluate the efficacy of these regarding soil functions and ecosystem services as well as costs and benefits

RECARE project objectives Upscale results from the study site to the European scale using innovative simulation approaches to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of measures across Europe Evaluate constraints for, and ways to, facilitate adoption of these measures by stakeholders Carry out an integrated assessment of existing soil related EU and national policies and strategies to identify their impacts, synergies and potential inconsistencies, and to derive recommendations for improvement based on RECARE results Disseminate project results to all relevant stakeholders, from land users to high level policy makers

RECARE conceptual framework = drivers/pressures; S = state; I = impact; R = response; = RECARE main aims)

Flow of information 3 main sources of information Internal work WP WP depending on other WPs WP depending on Case Studies Of course, all 3 sources make use of previous work

RECARE methodological framework

Information DOW on links between WPs PERT chart (but at task level  too complex for practical use) Gant chart for timetable Methodological framework for case studies RECARE conceptual framework with aims (but do not relate 1:1 to WPs) General WP descriptions Contains for each WP information on links with other WPs Task descriptions regularly give details on such links

Flow of information –example DOW ‘WP4 assists other WPs, especially WPs 3, 5-7 in stakeholder involvement. It with WP7 on the assessment of ecosystem services. It feeds into Task 8.5 and Tasks 9.2 – 9.5 and provides stakeholder and institutional analysis and insights into stakeholders’ preferred format, type and content of information to help shape the dissemination and communication strategy in WP11. It also links with WP5 in completing and adapting the WOCAT questionnaires.’ Too many links for a single chart, but charts per WP possible (example next slide)

WP3 Data providers Collaboration Data users WP2 WP10 WP2 WP4 WP7 Information on data requirements and methods to be used Collaboration might be required due to time constrains WP10 WP2 WP3 Collaboration Spatial database Stakeholder collaboration and data WP4 State of degradation and conservation Data needs to assess ecosystem services Spatial data to select sites, data needs to assess soil threats WP7 WP5,6,7 Model input Data users WP6 WP7,8

WP4 Data providers Collaboration and assistance Data users WP4 links WPs Data providers WP2 Information soil functions and ecosystem services (WP2.3) Collaboration and assistance WP3 Stakeholder collaboration and data (WOCAT mapping) Demonstrating impact of measures to stakeholders WP6 Training on stakeholder workshops for identification and selection of measures WP5 WP4 Valuation of ecosystem services by stakeholders, exploring the adoption of measures WP7 Dissemination and communication WP11 Policy stakeholder workshop WP9 Input to integrated impact assessment WP9 WP11 Understand stakeholder requirements for the development of dissemination and communication strategy Model input Data users WP 8

Set-up of RECARE: WPs work across all Case Studies Case Studies work across all WPs (esp 3-7)

Overall planning

Important to move from flow-chart to planning: Links to other WPs Internal tasks WP leader & links with Case Studies List of steps that are necessary to achieve WP aims and deliverables, with deadlines for these steps Specify what information is needed for these steps, and when Specify who should provide this information: WP leader, other WPs or case studies Specify the workload (esp for Case Studies) associated with each request

Important to move from flow-chart to planning: Specify which knowledge and/or tools the data providers need to provide the data Specify how data-providers will obtain this knowledge and/or tools (training, video instruction, distance learning, manual etc). Are the necessary tools ready, or do the need to be developed/adapted first? How much time is needed for that? Does WP leader need any assistance? Pitfalls that are relevant for WPs

RECARE planning Should have a detailed planning for first 12-18 months on Friday Planning should be realistic, and should avoid overloading of Case Studies

To achieve this: WP sessions this afternoon, to explain WP work, identify bottlenecks etc Soil threat sessions & Case study posters tomorrow, to be informed about different threats and to get overview of which data (including research results) are available WP workshops & training on Thursday and Friday

Thank You!
