Introduction to Narrative Writing Mrs. Duggan Grade 7 ELA

Narrative (Fictional & Personal) Three Types of Writing Expository Narrative (Fictional & Personal) Persuasive

An expository prompt does not ask you to write a story. Expository Writing An expository prompt does not ask you to write a story. Instead, expository prompts asks to write truthfully and factually on a specific subject. Thesis Statement! Facts & Information! Claims & Support!

Any type of writing that tells a story is considered a narrative. Narrative Writing Any type of writing that tells a story is considered a narrative. There are two types of narratives: 1. Fictional Narrative 2. Personal Narrative

Imagined! Creative! Fictional Narrative This type of narrative asks you to tell an imagined story that has a made-up characters, a conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution (elements of fiction). Imagined! Creative!

Descriptive! Based on real experiences! Personal Narrative This type of narrative asks you to tell a story about a real-life experience that you have personally been through. Descriptive! Based on real experiences!

What is the difference between these prompts? Expository Prompt Fictional Narrative Personal Narrative Over the past few years, Cohasset has grown tremendously in size. As a result, class sizes have increased in middle school. Write a research paper that analyzes the growth in class sizes and the impact the growth has had on middle school teachers and students. Nobody seems to know why Cohasset’s population has grown so rampantly over the past few years. There is a theory that the population has increased as a result of an alien invasion. Write a short story about where these aliens came from, why they’re here, and what they plan to do here. As we grow up, our hometowns become the source for our fondest memories. Recall a time when you did something in Cohasset that was memorable. Tell the story of what the memorable event was, what happened, and why it was important to you. Use descriptive language to portray the event.

Ideas in Personal Narrative Writing Focuses on one single experience Student re-creates the event with descriptive details and dialogue

Organization of Personal Narrative Writing Gets the reader’s attention with an interesting introduction Makes the order of events clear by using transitional words/phrases Usually there is not a set organizational pattern Concludes by summarizing the significance of the event

Voice in Personal Narrative Writing Uses the active voice: the subject performs the action Uses the first-person perspective and uses “I” Example: “I climbed up the steps of the treehouse to find..” Uses language that is real and sounds authentic

Word Choice in Personal Narrative Writing Brings the event alive by using sensory details and figurative language.

Sentence Fluency in Personal Narrative Writing Uses a variety of sentence types (statements, questions, commands and exclamations)
