Skeletal System and Muscular System By Mrs. Carrera

Bones in the body… The human body contains 206 bones Skeletal system provides shape and support, allows movement, protects tissues and organs, stores materials, and produces blood cells

Joint Joints are any place where bones come close together and can allow movement

Pivot Joint A pivot joint is found in the neck and vertebrae

Hinge Joint A hinge joint is found in the elbow, it allows the elbow to move

Ball and Socket Joint Ball and Socket Joints are found in the hip and femur bone

Ligaments Bones are held together with stringy connective tissue called ligaments

Tendon Tendons attach bones to muscle

Axial Skeleton The axial skeleton is made up of the skull, the ribs, the breastbone, and the vertebral column

Appendicular Skeleton The appendicular skeleton is the hands, feet, legs, hips, shoulders. There are 126 bones in the appendicular skeleton

Cartilage Cartilage is a hard jelly like substance that forms your nose and ears

Marrow Marrow is the soft material found in the middle of bones

Muscular System Muscles always work in pairs. In order for skeletal muscles to move, they must contract or shorten.

Skeletal Muscle Skeletal muscle contracts and allows your arms, legs, head and other body parts to move.

Smooth Muscle Smooth muscle is involuntary. That means that smooth muscle can contract without you causing them to. These are found in your large and small intestines.

Cardiac Muscle Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. It is also an involuntary muscle.
