Section 7 Quiz Review

Creation of a new species. Define “speciation”. Creation of a new species.

A group of organisms that can reproduce viable offspring. Define “species”. A group of organisms that can reproduce viable offspring.

Consists of all the genes in a population. Define “gene pool”. Consists of all the genes in a population.

Define “biodiversity”. The variety of life in the world.

Explain what behavioral reproductive isolation is. When animals do not reproduce because they have different mating rituals.

Give an example of behavioral reproductive isolation. Bird songs Bird Dances Peacock Feathers

Explain what geographic reproductive isolation is. When animals do not reproduce because they live too far apart.

Give an example of geographic reproductive isolation. The grizzly bear and the polar bear

Explain what temporal reproductive isolation is. When animals do not reproduce because they mate during different times.

Give an example of temporal reproductive isolation. The spring cricket and the fall cricket

What is directional selection? When nature favors ONE type of a population more than the others.

Draw a graph that shows directional selection.

What is stabilizing selection? When nature favors the most common type of a population more than the others.

Draw a graph that shows stabilizing selection.

What is disruptive selection? When nature favors the two extremes of a population more than the most common type.

Draw a graph that shows disruptive selection.

What is relative (gene) frequency? The number of times an allele occurs in a gene pool.

How can relative frequency effect a gene pool? The more fit an animal is the more likely it will survive and reproduce in its environment; then there will be more of its genes in the gene pool.

What are the two sources of genetic variation? 1) Mutations 2) Gene shuffling

A random change in relative frequency because of chance. What is genetic drift? A random change in relative frequency because of chance.

What can cause genetic drift? 1) Natural disasters 2) Alleles passed on randomly

What is Founder Effect? When relative frequencies change because a small group of the population moves away.

What can cause Founder Effect? Migrations Birds do this during cold seasons Animals can do this when there is limited resources

Single gene traits is when one gene can give you 2 phenotypes. What is the difference between a single-gene trait and a polygenic trait? Single gene traits is when one gene can give you 2 phenotypes. Polygenic traits are phenotypes that come from more than one gene.
