Compromise of 1850 agreement that allowed California to be admitted as a free state by allowing popular sovereignty in the territories and enacting a stricter fugitive slave law

Election of 1856 Political Parties Involved: Democrats, American, Republican Buchanan: promised to “end the agitation.” Buchanan wins

Abraham Lincoln Slavery- Wanted to contain, not abolish Popular Sovereignty- questioned workability after Dred Scott Kansas-Nebraska Act- believed territories should be closed to slavery Dred Scott- disagreed with the decision

Wilmot Proviso bill that would have banned slavery in the territory won from Mexico in the Mexican War

Kansas-Nebraska Act Written by Stephen Douglas Called for popular sovereignty in the Kansas and Nebraska territories.

Harper’s Ferry John Brown intended to seize the weapons and start a slave revolt throughout the south. Ended with Brown’s arrest and hanging.

Bleeding Kansas Pro-slavery forces sacked Lawrence, Kansas. John Brown and supporters killed 5 men in Pottawatomie Creek.

Free-Soil Party Formed by anti-slavery Whigs and Democrats.
