Connectors Esther Miñana. Roseta Villarroya. Araceli Viñarta.

Connectors are used like linking words to match ideas, express opinions, show sequence, describe causes and results, to give examples and to conclude. They help us to organize our writing and speaking. In addition, to improve our essays. There are a huge amount of connectors, so to organize them, we classify them depending on their purpose.

INDEX TO START. TO LIST POINTS / TO SHOW TIME / TO SHOW SEQUENCY. TO CONCLUDE. TO ADD POINTS ON THE SAME TOPIC. TO DESCRIBE A CAUSE TO GIVE EXAMPLES. TO INTRODUCE FACTS. TO DESCRIBE A RESULT TO EXPRESS A CONTRAST OR INTRODUCE OPPOSITE POINTS. TO EXPRESS OPINIONS AND TO MAKE GENERAL STATEMENTS.

To start These kind of connectors are used to introduce what we are going to talk about, for example: To begin/start with + noun. In the first place, first, firstly, at first ( secondly, thirdly…). First of all. In the beginning. Back

To list points, to show time, to show sequences. We use these sort of connectors to continue talking about a topic, such as: Before. Next, later, after that, afterwards. Then. Soon. When, as. While, meanwhile. Until. As soon as. Back

To conclude When we want to finish something or to sum up our ideas, we use these type of connectors, for instance: Eventually. In conclusion. At last, lastly. In the end. To sum up, in short. All in all. Back

To add points on the same topic If we want to add more information about something we can use these kind of connectors. And. In addition, besides, furthermore, moreover. What’s more. Also, too. As well as. Back

To describe a cause. These connectors are the ones that help us to explain a reason: Because. Because of. Due to, due to the fact that. Since. As, as a result of. Another reason for……. is….. Exercices. Back

To give examples Like. Such as. For example. For instance. To take (just) one example. A clear example of…… might be…… Particularly. Specially. As an example. As well / as well as. Back

To introduce facts. To describe a result. Consequently, as a consequence. ( exercises) For this reason. That’s why. Indeed. In the same way. The truth is that. So. Therefore. Thus. In fact. Actually. By the way. Back

To express a contrast or introduce opposite points. But. However. Nevertheless. Although, thought, even thought. Instead of. Even if. In spite of / despite of. Whereas. On the one hand, on the other hand. In contrast. It can be argued. Back

To express opinions and make general statements. These connectors are used to show our opinion or feelings about something. In my opinion. I strongly believe that. I think/ feel. In my view/ from my point of view. It seems to me. As I see it. Personally / I personally think. As far as I’m concerned. Further connectors

Other useful expressions. More or less. Above all. And so on. By the way. Anyway / In any case. Of course / Absolutely. To write a story. Beginning the story: at the beginning, at first. Continuing the story: before, after, next, later, when, then, as soon as. New elements to the story: suddenly, all of a sudden. Events occurring at the same time: while, as, during. Ending: eventually, at last, in the end, finally.
