MY SERVICE LEARNING JESSICA KIMBRELL
WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING? Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility (Committee Minutes, January 25, 2001).
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SERVICE LEARNING? When participating in Service Learning, you are able to give back to your community. It is always a very rewarding experience, and it is wonderful knowing that you are doing your part to help others.
PHI MU TRASH PICK-UP ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY I picked up trash on Patterson Street, Phi Mus adopted highway
PHI-MU MATCHES FOR MIRALCES TENNIS TOURNAMENT I helped raise money for the Childrens Miracle Network by volunteering at Phi Mus annual tennis tournament.
VSU FOUNDATION I supported the Valdosta State University Foundation by purchasing a t-shirt. All proceeds went to the VSU Tennis Team.
VALDOSTA PEDIATRIC THERAPY I volunteered at Valdosta Pediatric Therapy. I shadowed the speech therapists there and helped with the kids.
RELAY FOR LIFE I participated in VSUs Relay for Life, which raises money for cancer research.
WHAT DID I GET OUT OF MY SERVICE LEARNING? After completing my service learning, I feel like I have a better understanding of what it means to help other people. I realize how well off I am, and I want to do more in the future to give back to my community.
