Transitioning to a Clean Grid: What’s Next for the Central Coast? Energy Panel Central Coast Sustainability Summit October 11, 2017 Kelly Ferguson – Energize California Director Santa Barbara & Ventura Counties, Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (Moderator) Jordan Sager – Energy Manager, UCSB Craig Lewis – Founder and Executive Director, Clean Coalition

Major changes in store for local energy generation September 28th - 58-MW Ellwood natural gas peaker plant in Goleta denied by the CPUC The CPUC released an announcement preparing for a rejection of the 262-MW Puente Power Plant proposal in Oxnard SB 338 – expected to be signed by Governor Brown mandating carbon-free alternatives to gas generation to meet peak demand

What’s next? What does this mean for the region? How can local municipalities and facilities prepare? Many clean energy alternatives are tested, proven and mainstream The CEC is supporting pilot projects and clean energy startups through grants to encourage clean energy innovation and adoption Key opportunities for energy efficiency, distributed energy generation, storage, microgrids, and grid edge technologies

Energize California is the hub for clean energy innovation Funded by the CEC & supporting Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. An initiative of LACI. The Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) is a private non-profit organization helping to accelerate the commercialization of clean technologies. Rated as one of the best incubators in the world by UBI. ECA is the hub for energy innovation in the 4 counties. As an initiative of LACI in collaboration with over 15 partner organizations and the Energy Commission, ECA’s goal is to accelerate clean energy development and deployment. ECA is part of the energy commission’s EPIC program, which recently launched a statewide initiative to help meet the state’s clean energy goals through regional energy innovation clusters. We are one of four clusters in the state, spanning the greater LA region. The energy commission was trying to create networks that encourage innovation and provide the support that entrepreneurs need to succeed and get their technology to market more quickly.

Energize California is the hub for clean energy innovation Regional hub for Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties A regional convener An information resource Goals Accelerate clean energy development Connect stakeholders in the energy ecosystem Support entrepreneurs and startups in the Innovators Program

What is clean energy? Technology should provide benefit to the electric ratepayers of California Energy efficiency Renewables Energy storage Software: data, measurement, and analytics Demand response Microgrids EV infrastructure

How to Get Involved First cohort launching this month Join the Energize California Network – www.energize-ca.org Local clean energy events Stay up-to-date on energy industry news Energize California Innovators program – applications open No cost to participate 12 Month commitment First cohort launching this month EVmatch Next Energy Technologies Technology focus – Clean energy technology that will improve the grid’s sustainability and reliability Generation technologies Examples: Solar PV, Wind, biogas, energy harvesting Transmission & Distribution technologies Examples: Microgrid controllers, superconductors, materials that increase capacity in high-voltage electric power transmission cables, EV chargers, grid-scale energy storage, forecasting technologies, sensors  End-Use technologies Examples: Customer side energy storage, energy efficiency, water efficiency, demand response & demand control of technologies, industrial electrification Maybe note here that there are county directors who cover each county. Kelly/Emily in audience.
