This is the definition written by the World Health Organisation. ‘Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.’ (WHO 1986)

Another term often used is ‘Health Education’ This is an aspect of health promotion which focuses on educating people about good health, and how to develop and support it. Another related term is ‘social marketing’. This is when marketing (sales) techniques and methods are used to achieve specific behaviour changes. The aim of this is to improve health and reduce health inequalities.
