How did King William keep control? Learning Objective: To investigate how William kept control of England

How did King William keep control? By the end of today’s lesson… ALL OF US will be able to describe in detail what the Feudal System was. (4C-4B) EVEN BETTER IF you can explain how King William used the Feudal System to keep control. (4A-5B) EXCELLENT IF you can judge how important the Feudal System was to William. (with reasons to support your opinion) (5B-6C) CHALLENGE!!! CAN YOU COMPARE THE FEUDAL SYSTEM TO THE DOMESDAY BOOK AND JUDGE WHICH WAS MOST IMPORTANT AND WHY? (6B-7C)

Starter You are King William. You have just defeated your enemies and have been proclaimed King of England (Congrats). There is still trouble in the country. How are you going to protect your throne? In pairs, come up with as many ways as possible to protect what is rightfully yours! Anachronisms not allowed!

So, how did he keep control? ________ recognised that to keep ______, he had to give up some power. He paid for some powerful people called Barons to _______him. He gave them ____. In return, they promised to control the local people, collecting ______ and _______ for him. This is called the Feudal System, and it affected ________. protect everyone William fighting land taxes control

The Feudal System Most powerful The King gave land to the Barons and Bishops. The Barons and Bishops (about 300) promised loyalty to the King. The Barons would give Knights for the army for 40 days a year. The Barons would control and tax local people. The Barons gave land to their Knights and promised them protection and justice. With your partner, cut out and arrange the cards into their place in the Feudal System. The Knights (about 4000) promised loyalty to their Baron. They gave land to peasants and promised them protection and justice. The Peasants (about 1.5m) obeyed their Lord. Worked on his land for him. Paid their taxes. Least powerful

Describe the feudal system in no less than three sentences. Explain how the Feudal system helped William control England. (try to explain at least two reasons) Either Then ‘The Feudal System meant everyone had a master.’ How much do you agree with this? I strongly agree/disagree with this opinion because… Which was more useful to William, the Feudal system or the Domesday book?

The Swinton High School Feudal System I think it’s quite obvious who the King is! But who are the Barons? Who are the Knights? …and who are the peasants?

Task: Design and colour a Feudal System diagram for The Swinton High School. Can you think about how one section supports the other?
