1.1 Safety in the Science Class You must know all of these rules, techniques and procedures in order to participate in any of the Lab Activities. (See page 95 in textbook)

Terms Melting- a change from solid to liquid. Evaporation- a change from liquid to gas. Condensation- a change from gas to liquid. Freezing- a change from liquid to solid. Sublimation- a change from solid to gas. Deposition- a change from gas to solid.

Properties of Matter Properties- characteristics that can be used to describe a substance. These can be either Physical or Chemical. Physical Properties: 1. Color 2. Lustre 3. Melting Point 4. Boiling Point 5. Hardness 6. Malleability 7. Ductility 8. Crystal Shape 9. Solubility 10.Density 11. Conductivity Physical Change- the substances appearance or state may be altered, but its composition remains the same. Examples??

Properties of Matter Chemical change- always results in the formation of a different substance, which has its own unique ‘different’ physical properties. Examples?? 1.3 Observing Changes in Matter Matter can change from one form to another, or create new materials. A physical change occurs when a material changes state. A chemical change occurs when two or more substances react and create a new substance. Evidence that a chemical change has occurred includes: 1. Change in colour 2. Change in odour 3. Formation of a gas 4. Release or absorption of energy (heat)
