Making Connections

Directions In this activity, you will make observations about a series of diagrams and graphs to make connections between eating fatty foods and developing heart disease.

Diagram 1 1. Make two observations about the diagram above. 2. What does smoking do to your lungs? 3. What conclusions can you make about the claim “smoking causes lung cancer”?

Graph 1: 1. Make two observations about the graph 2. How does actively smoking compare to radon exposure when it comes to getting lung cancer? 3. What final conclusions can you make about the claim: Smoking causes most lung cancers?

Pie Charts 1. Make two observations about the pie charts below. 2. Do these two pie charts support or refute the claim that smoking causes most lung cancers? Justify your response with evidence.

Challenge! 1. Does this graph support of refute the claim that “smoking causes a majority of lung cancers?” Justify your response.

Making Connections Do your observations you have collected show a connection between smoking and causing a majority of lung cancers? Why or why not? Justify your response using evidence from at least two observations.
