1 Warm Up Objective: Scientists will explain the scientific method by conducting and analyzing either Save Sam! OR Making Slime! with at least 3 pieces of evidence justified. What is the topic? What will you be doing? Why is this important? How will you know if you have done well?

2 Warm Up Objective: Scientists will explain the scientific method by conducting and analyzing either Save Sam! OR Making Slime! with at least 3 pieces of evidence justified. What is the topic? Scientific method What will you be doing? Conducting and analyzing Save Sam! OR Making Slime! Why is this important? One of the ways that scientists answer questions How will you know if you have done well? Have 3 pieces of evidence justified

3 Scientific Method--NOTES
What is the scientific method? It is a PROCESS that is used to find ANSWERS to questions about the world around us.

4 Scientific Method--NOTES
Is there only one “scientific method”? NO, there are several versions of the scientific method. Some versions have more STEPS, while others may have only a few. However, they all begin with the identification of a PROBLEM or a QUESTIONS to be answered based on observations of the world around us and provide an ORGANIZED method for conducting and analyzing an experiment.

5 Scientific Method--NOTES
What is a hypothesis? It is a PREDICTION based on observations and your knowledge of the topic.

6 Scientific Method--NOTES
What is data? It is INFORMATION gathered during an experiment.

7 Scientific Method Flow Chart
Complete the flow chart using the phrase bank.  Discuss with your partner.

9 CER and your Activity Choose your activity: Save Sam! (candy) OR Making Slime! (slime) Answer your activity’s question to make a CLAIM: How will your pair/group save Sam? -My pair/group will save Sam by ______. How will your pair/group make THE best slime? -My pair/group will make THE best slime by ___.

10 CER and the Activity EVIDENCE—what is your data? Choose THREE data points. Save Sam! How long did it take to Save Sam? How many tries? How did your procedure change? What did it look like once you saved Sam? Making Slime! Describe the slime’s stretchiness, ooziness, fluffiness, squeezability, etc. Describe what your slime looked like

11 CER and the Activity REASONING
How does your evidence connect to your claim? Does it support your claim? How so? Does it NOT support (refute) your claim? How so?

12 CER and the Activity EXPLANATION
Connect your claim, evidence, and reasoning in a cohesive paragraph.
