Which Direction?01/01/2019 LG1: To use an Atlas to find countries LG2 : To learn how to give and follow directions.

How do you give direction in Geography?

Use an Atlas to work out these directions: Scotland to England is S N. Ireland to Scotland London to York Glasgow to Edinburgh London to Liverpool Birmingham to Cardiff Brighton to Ipswich UK to Canada UK to Australia UK to Greenland Now write 10 more of your own using an atlas to also locate cities. London to Sao Paulo is__________

A Journey through Europe Using a map, describe a journey through Europe using your compass skills Success Criteria: You must travel through at least FOUR countries You must use at least FOUR different directions

Using Maps: Symbols and Direction Who Am I? Using Maps: Symbols and Direction Learning Goals:- To draw a compass rose To give directions To recognise and draw basic map symbols I can tell my neighbour which direction is North South East or West (4 point compass). I can recognise simple symbols. Stretch I can give my neighbour directions using North West, South East etc (8 point compass). I can use a key to find out different symbols. Challenge I can give my neighbour directions using 16 point compass points. I can say if a symbol is an abbreviation or an image.

Why don’t we use left and right in geography? North South East West What is the rhyme to remember the order?

How is direction shown on a map? 1. The best way to show direction is to use the points of the compass. There are 4 main compass points: North East South West These can be remembered in the correct order by saying “Never Eat Shredded Wheat”

On Maps

North ?? ?? East West ?? ?? South Task 1: Label your compass with the correct points Extension: If you were stood at the south pole, which way would be north?

Between these 4 main points are 4 more points (this gives us an 8 point compass). North West North East South West South East

We can be even more accurate in the direction we give by using a 16 point compass. North West North East South West South East Where do you think the following go? North North East - East South East - West South West South South East - West North West - South South West

Can you name the final 2 points of the 16 point compass? We can be even more accurate in the direction we give by using a 16 point compass. North North East North West North East West North West West South West East South East South West South East South South West South South East Can you name the final 2 points of the 16 point compass?

Is the map showing the classroom layout clear and easy to understand? How could it be made clearer? By using… SYMBOLS

Why do we use symbols on a map? When drawing a map it is important to include as much detail as possible however the map must remain clear and easy to read. To make sure all the detail will fit on the map we use different images, abbreviations, lines and colours to represent things. Symbols are used to save space and to make it easier to see things. Every map must have a KEY that explains what the symbols mean.

Map symbols Find the symbols for each of these…Write them down and draw them neatly in your book. Coniferous Trees Motorway Footpath Station (Bus or Coach) Golf course Youth hostel Place of Worship with a Tower Museum Camp site Viewpoint

How might what I have learnt today be useful? GCSE geography Duke of Edinburgh Getting to know where places are in relation to one another Planning cycle routes Using maps in every day life: You need to be able to use a key, symbols and direction to use the tube!

Write 10 questions about your map to use next lesson!!! Include: A compass (16 point), real symbols, 10 features and a Key. Write 10 questions about your map to use next lesson!!! What is north of the treasure? If I walk south west from the castle what will I see? If the ship sails East, what will it bump in to? LAST PLACE WED P3
