1 Aim: How are Maps used? Do Now: Answer the following questions in your notebooks. - What situations might you find yourself in where a map would be helpful? - Are there different kinds of maps?

2 A globe is a spherical model of Earth.
What is the true shape of Earth? What object best represents this true shape of Earth? Oblate Spheroid Ping-Pong ball A map is a flat model of Earth.

3 Maps cause there to be errors in shape, size and distance of the land masses.
WHY? Is Greenland as large as the U.S? Is Antarctica this big?

4 I. Legends explains what objects or features the symbols represent on the map. All legends should have: - scale - compass

5 A. Scaling The scale relates to a distance between two points on a specific map. With a ruler, it can be used to find accurate distances on a map 0.5 1 Kilometer 1 Mile

6 B. Compass Never Eat Shredded Wheat
The compass rose gives us directions North, South, East and West, based on the orientation of the map. Never Eat Shredded Wheat
