Breaktimes At break time we encourage the children to have a drink and go to the toilet. During morning break, Key Stage 1 are offered free fruit at break time. They take their fruit outside with them. We no longer have milk. Water is available throughout the day and we encourage the children to have a drink at appropriate times. Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school everyday.

P.E. Our P.E. days are on Monday and Wednesday. PE Kits: Children will require a P.E. kit to be worn during P.E. lessons. Your child will need: a white or blue t-shirt, shorts and plimsolls. If your child does not have their P.E. kit in school they will be unable to participate in P.E. and will have a reminder text sent home about their P.E. kit. Earrings should be removed on P.E days. We no longer accept tape. Please remember to clearly name all items of uniform so that any lost items of clothing can be returned to their rightful owner! Any unnamed items will be placed into the Lost property box outside class 5.

Reading Reading is an important skill and we value it highly at school. Please make sure children brings their reading books into school each day. Your child will be given two reading books each week. We encourage you to listen to your child read at least three times a week. You can help support your child’s reading development by listening to them read, reading to them yourself and sharing a variety of books at home. We value your support and encourage you to contribute to your child’s reading diary, regularly. In school we will pick up any comments left in their reading diary. We hear the children read at least once a week in school during a Guided Reading afternoon. Library – we visit the library once a week on Thursday and the children can choose a book to take home.

Phonics In Year 1, we teach phonics daily as soon as the register has taken place. It is important that your child arrives to school on time otherwise they will miss out on vital phonic learning. Children are grouped across the year group according to their phonic needs. We continue the work from EYFS and work through the different phases of the Letters and Sounds scheme. Year 1 children complete a statutory phonics check in June. We will be holding a phonics meeting about this nearer the time. They may have phonemes sent home to learn.

Homework Homework will usually support work undertaken in class and as such, your child should be able to complete a task independently. Homework will be given out on Friday and will be due back on Thursday. The children stick in their own homework. Homework will include key information, your child’s English and Maths targets and weekly spellings. Spellings will be tested every Friday morning and either be phonic based spelling or the Year 1 common exception words. Please encourage your child to write in cursive handwriting at home.

How Can You Help? We want to encourage our children to be as independent as possible. For example, we encourage them to be responsible for remembering their own reading books and homework. Read everything! Books are for enjoyment, as well as learning, so encourage reading as much as you can. Talk about what they’ve read, ask opinions, make predictions, visit the library and make sure your child sees you reading too. Book bags! Please use the book bag your child has been given in foundation stage. As these fit neatly into draws. We do not have the room for big rucksacks, especially during the winter time when coats and gloves are brought in.

Communicating with your teacher We are always here to talk. At the end of the day is a better time to approach us as the mornings are focussed on getting the children settled in. If you need to get a message to us in the morning, please contact the office and they will pass it on to us.

Any Questions? We hope that this presentation is useful. Should you have any questions, please feel free to speak to a member of staff. We aim to ensure that your children’s experience in Year 1 is a happy and rewarding one. We look forward to working with both you and your child/children.
