Change and continuity in immigration (c. 1000-2010) www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk

Lesson Objectives Starter task Change and Continuity 1000-2010 Lesson Objectives Starter task To identify evidence of change and continuity in migration to Britain over the last 1000 years. To select a range of sources that show change and continuity and explain how they do so To evaluate the extent of change and continuity in migration to Britain between 1000 and 2010 Use the timeline to recap groups of migrants who came to Britain over the last 1000 years – try to name at least 3 groups who came in each time period This lesson is designed to be delivered when the course content has been completed. www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk

Timeline of Migration to Britain: 1000-2010 Period 1000-1500 (Medieval) 1500-1750 (Early modern) 1750-1900 (Industrial & Imperial period) 1900-2010 (20th & 21st centuries) Groups that came in each period Pupils recap their knowledge of groups that came in each period. www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk

Overview Task 1. For the medieval period: Change and Continuity 1000-2010 Overview Task Using the Our Migration Story website… 1. For the medieval period: Identify the source that best represents migration in this period Justify your choice with an explanation of why you have chosen it. 2. Then, for each of the following three time periods, explore the sources in each section and: Identify a source that shows change in migration to Britain, or the experiences of those groups coming to Britain, from the previous period (comparing it to the choice you made for medieval migration). Identify a source that shows continuity in migration to Britain, or the experiences of those groups coming to Britain, from the previous period (comparing it to the choice you made for medieval migration). For each source you have chosen, justify your choice with an explanation of why you have picked it. Instructions for activity. Pupils will interact directly with sources to identify ones that best represent change and continuity. www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk

Change and continuity in immigration c.1000-2010 Period Source What this sources shows Change or continuity? Explanation of your choice 1000 - 1500 1500 – 1750 1750 – 1900 1900 - 2010 Pupils complete the table based on their research on the Our Migration Story website. www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk

Your argument should be one-sided – you are arguing to win! Debate 2: ‘There has been more change than continuity in the experiences of immigrants in Britain since the medieval period.’ Debate 1: ‘There has been more change than continuity in the reasons why people have come to Britain since the medieval period.’ Two debates: 4 teams – two will argue for the interpretations stated at the top, two will argue against it. You will have x minutes to prepare your argument, drawing on the work you did researching the sources and selecting sources to demonstrate change and/or continuity Your argument should be one-sided – you are arguing to win! www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk
