Overview The English Department follows the AQA specification for English Language and English Literature Aim: for each student to leave year 11 with 2 GCSEs in English English Language Paper 1 – 50% Paper 2 – 50% English Literature Paper 1 – 40% Paper 2 – 60% Y11 Y10

AQA GCSE English Literature

In year 9 pupils read: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens An Inspector Calls by JB Priestley Poetry: Love and Relationships cluster from the AQA anthology In year 10 pupils will study the Power and Conflict cluster

The main changes to the curriculum are: New grading system (9 – 1) No tiers: there is no foundation or higher paper – every pupil will have the same exam 100% exam: no coursework or controlled assessment Four exams: 2 for English Language and 2 for English Literature Pupils must study 3 whole texts (British Literature) All exams are closed book (although extracts are provided for some questions) Main change: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (AO6 - SPaG) marks rewarded for each exam for Language and Literature-AO6 will constitute 20% of each award All pupils must complete a Spoken Language assessment (Speaking and Listening)
