For example, which row has the smallest sum? Estimate the mean of the second row, etc. The questions could be answered one at a time using wipe boards – in this way any serious misconceptions will quickly become apparent. Alternatively, a time limit could be given in which pupil’s find as many answers as possible. There is also scope for some whole-class discussion based around any strategies pupil’s may have used. A possible homework task is for pupils to design their own grid with ten accompanying questions. Possible content Basic number facts and properties, and associated vocabulary.
