1 Using ratios 1) Check these fraction simplifications are correct.
[N3.2 Support Starter] 1) Check these fraction simplifications are correct. a) b) c) d) e) f) Are there easier ways to check without actually doing the simplification? Use a calculator if you wish. 2) Show how you would calculate of 24 so that someone else can understand. Preamble The first activity asks pupils to check some fraction simplifications and they should be asked to explain how they carried out the checking. Some pupils may need support explaining how they calculate fractions of a number. Possible content Simplifying fractions, calculating fractions of a number. Resources None. Solution/Notes (1) Possible methods of checking include changing both fractions to decimals or checking that the same “scale factor” applied to both denominators and numerators. Pupils’ own work – some may need prompting that the calculation may be seen as three lots of (a quarter of 24) – or a quarter of (3  24) it may also be useful to encourage pupils to use rectangles on square paper as a pictorial aid.
