[ A1.2 Support Plenary] This is a magic square. When the numbers in a row, column or diagonal are added, the answers are the same. This magic square has a total of 12. Show that this algebraic square is magic. What is its magic total? Use the algebraic magic square to help make a number magic square, with numbers that add up to 15. 6 1 5 3 4 7 2 Preamble This problem gives pupils the importunity to use some of their previously learnt algebraic techniques in a “real” situation – constructing magic squares. Possible content Simplifying algebraic expressions, substituting numerical values into algebraic expressions. Elementary mental arithmetic (to check numerical magic squares). Resources None (perhaps square paper to aid drawing magic square grids). Solution/Notes The magic total is 3m. Encourage pupils to check each others “numerical” magic squares.
