1 2-D shapes recap [GM4.1 Core Starter] a) Investigate the connection between the area of a square and the length of its diagonal squared. b) Try to find the connection between the area of a square and its perimeter squared. c) ABC is a triangle: A is at (1, 1) and B is at (5, 1). The area of the triangle is 6 squares. Find some possible positions of C. Preamble These problems are suitable for pairs and require pupils to interpret the situation and decide on the appropriate strategy. As a result some might need initial support. Possible content Areas of rectangles and triangles, perimeters of shapes, pattern spotting and using coordinates. Resources None. Solution/Notes a) Area of square = (diagonal squared) ÷ 2 or equivalent b) Area = (perimeter squared) ÷ 16 or equivalent c) Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2010 Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2010
