Solid Modeling SolidWorks Layout ENGR 1182 SolidWorks 01

Solid Modeling In The Real World Mechanical and Aerospace engineers need solid models of jet engine components and assemblies to do analysis on for component strength under high stresses and temperatures. This method of analyzing components for strength is called finite element analysis and is growing more popular in industry as a tool for predicting part viability.

Today’s Objectives Introduction to: Layout of SolidWorks 2D Sketching Starting SolidWorks Part File Layout 2D Sketching SW01 Activity View Block First 2D Profile SW01 Application

Before Using SolidWorks it is Recommended that you Change the Icons Color Select Tools/Options/Document Properties/Colors Under Icon color, change the option from Default to Classic To change Icons as shown below: Lecturers please note that SolidWorks 2016 defaults to no color on Icons. Since most of the Icons have not significantly changed, the majority of the PowerPoint slides have not been changed. In order to have SolidWorks match the slide representations, the color should be applied to the SolidWorks Icons. Click to return to TOC

SolidWorks Layout – An Introduction (At the end of this lesson you should be able to manipulate an already constructed SolidWorks Object and you are NOT expected to be able to create the object.) ENGR 1182 SolidWorks 01

SolidWorks Layout Starting SolidWorks Part File Layout Three Main Options Part File Layout Tool Ribbon 3D Part Creation Model Tree View Options Mouse Options

Starting SolidWorks Selecting File/New will bring up the following dialog box Also notice the Tutorials icon for extra help learning SolidWorks SolidWorks is started from the Start menu. The 3 new files icons represent part files, assemblies, and drawings. Currently we’re going to start with the basic building block of any project and that is part files.

SolidWorks Part File Layout Tool bar ribbon View Options Model Tree

SolidWorks Part File Layout Status Bar Information Line Units Control

SolidWorks Tool Ribbon Two most commonly used tabs: Features and Sketch Note these 2 commonly used drawing tools: 1) Line 2) Circle Features tab is 3D operations, Sketch is 2D. Operations that are not currently available are gray.

Making an Object in SolidWorks Draw a SKETCH using the 2D Drawing Tools Operate on that Sketch using a Feature like Extrude Boss/Base or Extrude Cut or Revolve Boss/Base or Revolved Cut Repeat Step 1 & 2 as required

SolidWorks 3D Part Creation The tool ribbon shows the tools available for creating 3D parts from 2D sketches

The left hand side of your SolidWorks menu is known as the Model Tree SolidWorks Model Tree The left hand side of your SolidWorks menu is known as the Model Tree Note that these items can be hidden by using “Cleaning up the Model Tree Display “ found in the “SolidWorks_Settings_and_Helpful_Hints” document. In a new part file it only shows the original 3 reference planes and the origin The model tree shows the creation of the part from top to bottom. The top is the beginning operations and the bottom is the last operations.

SolidWorks Model Tree The Model Tree keeps track of the model creation by showing the sketches or features used in order from top to bottom Notice that the sketches are no longer shown once used for a feature but can be accessed by clicking the plus sign next to that feature The model tree shows the creation of the part from top to bottom. The top is the beginning operations and the bottom is the last operations.

SolidWorks Viewing Options Viewing Option Layout In the top middle of the workspace there is a view menu Top Left Front Right Back “Normal to” view option orients to a selected plane or surface The layout of available views is not labeled but it should be easy to recognize the views from their layout. Bottom

SolidWorks Display Options The other icons control zoom, section views, display type and other advanced options Shadows and RealView Graphics (reflections) should be turned off before printing assignments

SolidWorks View Selector Cube The View Cube allows the user to see and select model views.

The View can also be changed by using the Hot Keys as follows: Isometric View Select FRONT Select Ctrl+8 TO GET FRONT VIEW Select Ctrl+7 to get ISO view Hit Esc to restore image

SolidWorks Mouse Buttons Right Click and Select a View is a Selection Tool The 2cd option is the Mouse Wheel Rotate wheel to zoom in/out on cursor Push down and hold the wheel and then move the mouse to rotate objects in 3 dimensions

Let’s Make a Simple Object (This is to illustrate the procedure you will learn in later lessons on SolidWorks and you are not responsible for being able to perform these construction steps)

SolidWorks Layout Wrap Up Starting Solidworks Part Assembly Drawing Part Layout Tool Ribbon  Features and Sketch Model Tree View Options  “Normal To” Mouse Shortcuts Application SW01: Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

SolidWorks Layout Practice Open this file in SolidWorks and familiarize yourself with the view options as well as zooming in and out. Also become familiar with navigating with the middle mouse button Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

Important Takeaways Layout of SolidWorks Tool Ribbon Model Tree View Options 2D Sketching Basic and Advanced Tools The assignmentfrom todays class is to complete the Application SW01. In future class sessions there will be an Activity (SW0X) and an Application (SW0x). Modeling - SOLIDWORKS Part available

SolidWorks Files: - Saving as PDFs or 3D PDFs - Creating and Manipulating 3D PDFs ENGR 1182 SolidWorks 01

Saving SolidWorks Files as PDFs to Produce Part Image In the drop down list under NAME select Adobe PDF Click on File/Print Select OK and Save PRINT To Produce thePDF Part Image In the drop down list under Save as type Select Adobe PDF Click on File/Save As SAVE . AS Click on Save

Saving SolidWorks Files as PDFs to Produce Part Image + Tree Click on the image and then select PICTURE TOOLS FORMAT/Wrap Text/Square. Click again on Wrap Text/In Front of Text. Maximize the SolidWorks screen and then hit the Print Scrn key and paste image into a WORD document Enlarge the Image by using the mouse to pull on a corner of the Image and adjust the position Click on File/Save As and in the drop down list under Save as type select Adobe PDF. To Produce the PDF Part Image + Tree

Saving SolidWorks Files as 3D PDFs Click on File/Print In the drop down list under NAME select Adobe PDF Select #D Printing and then OK and Save To Produce the 3D PDF Part Image Note that the 3D PDF can be manipulated by grabbing the colored arrows at the bottom left of the Image
